Tourism

The MCA investments in tourism aim to unlock further growth potential in the already rapidly expanding tourism sector by promoting private and community based investments. Facilitating access to four protected area complexes combined with a concerted effort to put Namibia on the international tourism map, removal of barriers and empowerment and capacity building of rural and disadvantaged Namibians are the key ingredients of an innovative approach to tourism development in Namibia. 

The objective of the Tourism Project is to grow the Namibian tourism industry with explicit targeting of income streams to conservancy households.

Tourism Project – Activities and Sub Activities (US$66.5 Million)

Improved Management and Infrastructure in Etosha National Park (ENP) Activity
- Management Capacity Sub-Activity
. Technical Advisor on change management to the Ministry of Environment and Tourism (MET) on the implementation of the Concession Policy around ENP and other National Parks, improve ENP’s service delivery, and introduce a cost-centre approach for ENP.
. The change management sub-activity will be informed by two studies, one on the tourism carrying capacity of ENP and the other on investment promotion strategies
- Infrastructure Sub-Activity
. Construction and renovation of over 100 staff houses at Okakeujo, Ombika, Galton gate and Otjivasandu
. Construction and renovation of management infrastructure (workshops, storage space, meeting rooms, etc.)
- Equipment Sub-Activity
. Road maintenance equipment to be used to maintain the roads in ENP and road development and maintenance in the adjacent conservancies
. Game capture equipment to facilitate the relocation of game to conservancies 

Marketing Activity
- International Marketing Sub-Activity
. Attracting more tourists from North-America
- Domestic Tourism Route Development Sub-Activity
. Creating attractive tourism routes – similar to the Cape to Namibia route – into the conservancy tourism areas to promote tourism visits into these up to now lesser explored areas of interest and linking Namibia with tourism routes in the Southern African Region.
- Inter-active Website Development Sub-Activity
. Expansion of the Namibia Tourism Board website to accommodate  interactive tourism route development and online bookings, and function the “gateway” to Namibia

Community-based Tourism Development
- Technical Assistance for Capacity Building Sub-Activity
. Create capacity amongst 31 conservancies in the NCAs to exploit tourism business opportunities, in partnership with private sector business, towards a higher level of self-financing. 
. Funding to assist 15 conservancies to take up equity in Joint Venture (JV) tourism lodges (i.e. partnership between conservancy and private sector business) to enhance the benefit stream from the JV lodge to the conservancies and its members.
